Bienvenidos en Guatemala!
So I finally arrived in Guatemala, my first impression from the air was a really mountainous country with widespread hillside jungles. Maybe it depends on the rain season which is present during this time a year. The airplane had to make two landing attempts since the was a very local storm on one side of the landing strip. The german girl next to me was terrified and had to be calmed by the stewardess.
The airport itself was filled with old plane wrecks displaying a collection of modern airplane history. Behind them was typical concrete buildings with rustic, corrugated steel roofs.
More or less everything I had expected and anticipated of Central America when it comes to atmosphere. It is hard to describe but the whole country has a totally unique aura of energy and you instantly get affected by it. The guatamalan people is a story by itself, it is not a exaggeration to say that it is one of the friendliest countries I've ever been to. With ATM which didn't work one Senorita made it here destined goal to find me one. After two unfunctional machines and a closed exchange hatch she had me being driven to a open ATM. Imagine that in a hurried developed country.
Right now I´m writing from the dormatory I've chosen for the two following nights. It is situated in a small town one hours drive from Guatemala City. The city is situated in a valley, packed with colonial churches and cathedrals, small cobbled streets and surronded by enourmous volcanos makes this place pitoresque. I think I will stay here a couple of days before I head towards Flores and the wonders of Tikal.
